Top 150cc Bike in India

Hello Bikers Friends,
Today we will review on Top 150cc Bikes in India. Well, In India 150cc Bikes are known as Racing Bikes but in other Countries their Entry Lebel bikes are of 500cc or 600cc Bikes. Anyways, we have to review on 150cc Bikes of India. The List is not so long, lets have a look:

1) Hero Impulse
2) Hero CBZ Extreme
3) Hero Achiever
4) Hero Hunk

5) Honda Unicorn
6) Honda Unicorn Dazzler.
7) Honda CBR150.

8) Yamaha SZ Seriese.
9) Yamaha FZ Seriese
10) Yamaha Fazer.

11) Bajaj Discover 150
12) Bajaj Pulsur 150
13) Bajaj Boxer 150.

14) TVS Apache 160
15) Suzuki GS 150R.

Out of these 15 Bikes, in first step we have to shortlist them. Well, Bajaj Boxer 150 is typically meant for Rural Biking. It has neither look nor Comfort again about Hero Achiever, I don't want to comment because everyone knows what the bike has achieved till date.

Hero Impulse is a Mud Bike, that means it can well run over the Mud, dirt or Hill like Roads. But in Real world, I don't think we should compare it with other Products in this segment because this bike is strictly for a single purpose, so will discuss about this product in any other post.

Now, we have 12 bikes in our hand. Before I start my discussion I want to share some facts that I used to find in various sites like "Honda Unicorn" is the best bike or "Bajaj Discover 150 is not at all a bike of 150cc segment". Well, in those places they are either reviewing only the power or mileage figures. But here we will discuss every parameters of a bike and our final Verdict will be on your Requirements.

So, we are ready to start our discussion about top 150cc bike in india. First of all, we have to make the list partitioned in 3 parts one for Reliable Engine and second for Cost Effective Biking and 3rd for only Power Racing.

If we look for cost Effective Bikes in 150cc segment, then the list will be very short like :
     1) Bajaj Discover 150cc
     2)Yamaha SZ Seriese.

If we consider about Styling and Performance without Caring for the Mileage, the list will be:
     1) Hero CBZ Extreme
     2) Hero Hunk
     3) Yamaha FZ Seriese
     4) Yamaha Fazer
     5) TVS Apache 160

If We consider about Performance, Engine Smoothness and Mileage(Actually if we are caring for this more):
     1) Honda Unicorn or Unicorn Dazzler
     2) Bajaj Pulsur 150
     3) Suzuki GS 150R.
     4) Honda CBR 150.

Now, You Decide which one you want.

If You have tight budget, then you have only 2 options in hand : 1) Yamaha SZ Seriese  2) Discover 150.

Out of these two Yamaha SZ is better if you are looking for Power+average Style+Reliable Engine and You can little sacrifice on Fuel Efficiency(well, the mileage will be 50+ but if you compare with discover 150 which is giving around 60 kmpl) and Resell Value then Yamaha SZ is the Best Product for You. It will cost Rs. 62000 on road and will give you a descent mileage of 50+kmpl.

If You consider Price, Mileage, average look and you can sacrifice Comfort then Bajaj Discover 150 DTSi is for You. It will give you a sureshot mileage of 55kmpl or even 60kmpl in Highway, but the top speed is lower than that of Yamaha SZ Engines. Again the Reliablity and Durability of Bajaj Bikcept es are far below than that of Yamaha bikes. So, its upto You.

From above 2 bikes, some points are noted below:
  • These(Discover 150 and Yamaha SZ) bikes are only bikes that costs below 62000 onroad.
  • Yamaha will give you all better than Bajaj except Mileage.
  • Bajaj will definitely a winner if you look at the Mileage part but a sure loser if you consider other facts like Power, Comfort and Racing Psychology
  • Considering on Resell Value Bajaj is ahead of Yamaha.
  • In Long Run, Ymaha is the winner due to its most refined engines.
So, as per my verdict in Low-Budget 150cc Bikes, although both are having their cards but still Yamaha will be the winner.

II) Only Performance (Not at all looking towards Mileage):

In this segment, Yamaha FZ are the Best. Because they will provide maximum power, Xtreme Look, Xtreme Comfort, Xtreme Stability. So here the winner is Clearly Yamaha FZ. If we consider for 2nd position then TVS Apache will come. Yamaha Fazer is also there if You like its look.. :) About Hero CBZ or Hero Hunk, they have nothing comparable with yamaha FZ except Brand Name. If You are a Damn addicted about Brand Value you may opt for Hero MotorCycles in this Segment. In last post "Top 125cc bikes in India", the winner was Hero Glamour but in case of 150cc segment Hero is still in Childhood stage. So, In this segment Yamaha FZ is the Clear Winner.

III) Power with Mileage(Little Compromise on Look):

In this segment, all the 4 bikes are cometing neck to neck. Honda is famous for its extra ordinary Smooth Engine where as Suzuki GS150R is best in look wise(Considering the Price point of View). Again Bajaj Pulsur is a Brand that ruled India over a decade. But what about Honda CBR 150??? Yes, It has Butter Smooth Engine, Good Mileage(around 45kmpl), very good riding posture, Highest Speed can be more than 130kmph. But but... can You afford it?? It costs extremely high i.e. 1,17,000 Ex-Showroom Delhi that means on road price is around "Rs.1,30,000". So, How many Indians can afford it?? If Price is not a constraint for You then you should definitely go for it. Now about Bajaj Pulsur 150 DTSi, I don't believe it can give you anything more than Mileage and that also upto 1st 3 years. You can see a long queue of Bajaj pulsur bikes at any 2nd hand bike showroom. The problem is that, bajaj is still fighting for Reliable Engines which Honda or Yamaha have already presented to the world. May be Bajaj Pulsur 200 NS can give some flight but pulsur 150 is not upto mark.

So, Finally if You want a good bike within 75,000 then Honda Unicorn is best option. About Dazzler, it doesn't have Kick start option again it will give you 3-5kmpl less mileage than Honda Unicorn. Dazzler has no more Sporty look (it seems its the elder brother of Twister).

So, In this segment, You can Either go for Honda Unicorn or Suzuki GS150R. But yes, Unicorn has a very good refined engine and extremely demand if you want to resell it. So, this segment the Clear winner is Honda Unicorn.

Final Verdict:

Now, as per our Discussion :
If You want a good 150cc Bike within less budget(Rs.60,000 around) then Yamaha SZ seriese is the Best Option. Here you have to sacrifice on look, but still it has not so bad look.. :)

If You opt for Look+Comfort+Power+Reliable Engine and You can Sacrifice on Fuel Efficiency then Yamaha FZ is for You.

If You consider Reliable Engine+Power+Comfort+Mileage then Honda Unicorn and Suzuki GS150R is for You but if You also consider "Resell" Value then Honda Unicorn is the Winner.

My Final Verdict goes to Honda Unicorn because I am not too RPM addicted.. :) But You have all the options to chose as per your requirement and psychology....

Thanks

  9. Thanks for the analytical representation, useful as well as interesting to the people having likings in this subject.Myself is a biker for last 21 years, still having the zeal and enthusiasm about bikes. Looking for your other blogs. Where do performance and power are separated? Is torque only the factor for producing higher speeds or it has other significance also? Which factors result in stability of a bike? Is there any report of yours on Bajaj Avenger 220 Dtsi will it be a suitable choice while thinking of going to change my existing Bajaj Pulsar 150cc? Having answers on the above questions will make me feel well informed.

    1. Hi Pratik,
Well I am having Good knowledge on Bikes but not the Best, rather I would say No one is Perfect in the World. You are having 21 years of Biking Experience which is around twice than Mine, So I believe You must have much better knowledge than me.. :) Still I am trying my best to resolve your doubts.. If you get satisfied, I will be happy else You can ignore it..,,. :)

On Power and Performance : Well sometimes we used them as Synonyms but Practically They are Totally Different from Each other. Power is something very simple i.e. we can measure it in Watts/KilloWatts. In Automobile world, Power is the Maximum Force that an Engine can supply to its Wheels in order to make the System to Run. If the Power is More, that means the Machine can Run with Maximum Speed or it can Carry Maximum Load with ease.

On the Contrary, Performance is the Refined term for Power i.e. It says How the Power of an Engine works under different Circumstances like when the Machine carry higher Load, When the Machine is under stress or when the machine runs at Higher Speed. In simple word, Performance is a subjective word which can be assumed by both Power and Torque of a Vehicle..

Final word, Simply Power does not imply that it has Better Performance rather its part of the Performance.

About Torque : Is torque only the factor for producing higher speeds?
No, Torque has Nothing to do with Speed directly.. You might have noticed the Specification of Torque i.e. "x NM @ y rpm".. Many People think that Higher Torque means Higher Speed, but its absolutely wrong... Torque is an Angular Force (Yes, Angular force not Linear) which is exerted upon the Wheel.. Well, after getting the Force (Angular) the wheels rotate as per the Power of the Machine which is again determined by the Acceleration we Provide through the Accelerator.. Well, after these steps the wheels run and get speed. Now, what about thar "RPM" in the Specification Sheet?? RPM is calculated for the Speed of the Wheel i.e. Angular Motion.. So, when it is written that "X n-m @ Y rpm" that means the Machine can Provide MAXIMUM "X n-m" torque @ "Y rpm".. So, we can divide the Torque Rating in following ways:

      1) Low n-m @ low rpm.
      2) High n-m @ Low rpm
      3) High n-m @ High rpm

See, the 1st one says that At low rpm (Speed in layman word), the Force is Low.. So, we can conclude that this Bike will Produce less Force in less speed i.e. Its a Pure Commuter Bike..

In 2nd Case, High n-m @ Low rpm, It represents that the Bike can Produce Higher Torque @ Low Speed i.e. it is Best for City Traffic or we can say its a Premium or Updated Commuter Segment Bike. These Bikes will have more Acceleration than the Previous one i.e. Good initial Pick up.

In 3rd Case i.e High n-m @ High Speed, these Bikes are for Speed Thrill... That means even at High speed (let @ 60-80 kmph) the machine can still Provide its Best torque, so the Speed of the Machine can increase More and More.. For Example if a Bike is @ 80kmph speed and Now, the Machine puts More Torque to the Wheel through accelerator then the Bike will run even More Fast i.e it may speed up to 120+ kmph depending on the Rating.

In Final Word, Torque is the Measurement of Acceleration (Or Pick Up in layman word) not Speed, though it is indirectly affects the Speed..

      Continue....

      Delete
    2. Continue...

Again Stability of a Bike is a subjective word.. It depends on which parameter You want to Compare the Bike with Other peers.. But, in Simple term, "Any Bike having Center of Mass at the Lower Position will have Better Stability".. Like Bajaj Avenger whose Center of Mass is at much Lower position than any Other Bike in India, so it will definitely give You Maximum stability while Driving..

About Pulsur 150 and Avenger, both are of Different Category i.e. P150 is a Premium Bike for Power but Avenger is a Cruiser.. In P150, You only get Power but in Avenger You can get both Power and Comfort of a Cruiser Bike.. So, if you want to Upgrade Go Ahead and Drive Your Bike with More Comfort than ever before... :)

      Thanks

    1. In 150cc Segment, there are many Bikes though but the winner is always Honda Unicorn and then Suzuki GS150R. So You can go either of those without any confusion. About Trigger, as its from the Honda Mill, so No doubt the Product is Better. You can also opt for this one.. It depends upon your taste.. :) Go for any of above and You will not regret but My final suggestion would be to go for Honda Bikes as they have Good resell value than any other bikes and I personally Prefer Honda Unicorn... Still you can take any from the 3... :)

m planning to buy a bike within 75k 150cc. my preferences are BEST IN CLASS MILLAGE+looks.
m completly in sync with ur views on suzuki 150.. i just want to confirm better real life efficiency of suzuki 150 between yamaha sz series.

    1. Hello Ashwini,
      Sorry for late Response.. :(
Between GS150R and Yamaha SZ Seriese, :
SZ will cost you 10,000 less than GS150. But, the Mileage is a Concern as Yamaha is known for Quality and Reliable Engine not for Mileage. It may give you 55kmpl but also may give you just 45kmpl, even at some time it may give you 40kmpl. Now, If you like the look of SZ over GS150, then I will suggest you to go for SZ because the initial savings of more than 10,000 will balance the Mileage issue.

Now about GS150, it will give you 50+kmpl on Highway and around 47kmpl inside City Traffic. Its Look is much more better than SZ (as per my choice). The Engine is Butter Smooth and Reliable. But, the Price would be Rs.75k against 63k of SZ bike.

So, You decide which bike You want to Purchase.

Finally, If you can Sacrifice a little on Look department, the Best bike will be Honda Unicorn with a Pricetag of 77k onroad. It has best in class mileage of 55kmpl on highway and 50+ inside City. Most Refined Engine, Most Reliable Engine, Best Resell Value and all...

So, You decide which one to go for..
If you want all BEST except Look, then Go for Unicorn.
For Better Look and descent Mileage and Low Resell Value Go for GS150.
For Budget 150cc Bike, Go for Yamaha SZ..

Still Confusion, Do comeback with Detailed information like "Where u drive mostly (City/Highway), Speed, Monthly usage, Mileage Requirements"...

      Thanks

    3. thanks for the reply boss, i'll mostly drive 15-20km/day in city (delhi, well...... we shud not get into terrific trafic cond). speed wud be around 55-65 (if allowd ... by traffic).

Again m completly in sync with ur view abt yamaha bikes.. thy r super in all aspects but millage has always been a concern in their bike.

however, hrd abt cb trigger, it has same engine as of dazler, and also better looks too. a little resrch on the net concludes its efficency too.

ur vote for honda's (unicorn) relaiblity , 150cc engine, 14.2bhp power,12nm torque, monoshock suspension, full digital console& its look compliment each other ++++ its decent millage reviews forced me think abt CB trigger.

m little less confused now thn hw i used to be for my bike.all thanks to u.

now hws cb trigger over GS150R & unicorn as the initial cost may not be a concern if overall performance is the trade off..

      thanks a ton fr reply.

      P.S. last minute sugestion's required.

    4. Hello Ashwini,
Well Trigger is definitely a style statement. Both Unicorn and Trigger are having the same Machine with just a little Power difference, Trigger has marginally higher power rating than Unicorn and of course a Sporty look with just Rs.3000 extra bucks. On the otherhand Unicorn will give you marginally Higher Mileage like 2kmpl more than Trigger. As Your monthly usage is less i.e. around 700-800 kms, You need not to worry about mileage. So, You can chose any one from them, you will not be disappointed.

From your point of view You should go for Trigger because you want a Sporty look Bike.. So, Go ahead...

      Thanks

  15. Hello sir, I am presently using passion pro since 3 yrs, my first bike. Now i want to change my bike to higher cc 125 or 150. My height is 5' 10", weight 85 KG's. I use to ride daily 15- 20 kms in city. Some times i have to go for long drive abt 70 - 100 kms. After reading so many reviews, i have 3 bikes in my mind. 1) Hero Glamour, 2) Honda Shine, 3) Honda Unicorn. Now please suggest me right bike for good mileage, looks, good engine, safety and riding comfort. Thank you sir.

    1. basha bhai, if ur ok with shine's look.. JUST GO FOR IT. coz i hv a very +ve reviews abt it from my surroundings (atlest 2 bikes around).
if looks does matter than i wud suggest pulsar 135. it is satisfying all ur needs.... looks (non doubt, yes it has), mileage & latest tech twin spark 4 valve engine + it will cost u same around ur selection (67 on road in delhi.)
as far as above 3 bikes r concerned my personal thinking is that you hv healty body so, shine & glamour wont suit u. so now its either unicorn or others (depending on ur further resrch)

go for bikes with some height....

    2. Dear Basha,
Please mention whether you want to Drive with High speed or within 50kmph. Also mention your Mileage importance.

Anyway, From Your List Honda Unicorn is simply the Winner. It has Best IN CLASS Mileage, Reliable Engine, Resell Value, Engine Smoothness, Brand Value and all.. So, if you want to spend Rs.77k onroad, this Bike will be best for You.

Else, please mention the above details, so that I can analyze your requirement best...

+ Mileage of 65kmpl on Highway (economic speed) and 55kmpl inside city.

  18. Hi Satya,

Thank you for your insights on bikes. Very useful.

This is Prasad from Aamachi Mumbai.. :) I have been using HH Passion+ since last 7 years. Have decided to upgrade to 150 CC. Obviously like most others CB Unicorn was my first choice. Though we already have one at home (Brother's). I'm 5' 10" and want good reliable bike with comfort and decent mileage. Recently I have researched a lot on SUZUKI GS150R and found out that it is the best 150CCafter CB Unicorn. It is very big, heavily build (Good for balance as I weight 83KG ) and looks damn beautiful (Specially WHITE). The only thing bothering me is that its pricey despite not having tubeless tires. Also, it is hardly seen in Mumbai traffic. Is it reliable machine? worth spending 80K (On Road - MUM)? What would you'll suggest.

  19. Also one more point like to add.. our unicorn gives around 53 KMPL in city with very low maintenance.. how about GS150R?

    1. Hello Prasad,
      Good Morning!!
Well, About Unicorn and GS150, Both Bikes are Durable, Powerful and Reliable. You can trust on both Bikes. But the small difference between the Bikes is : Mileage, Look and Resell Value.

GS150 is definitely much more appealing than Unicorn in terms of Look. But its mileage is 3-5 kmpl less than that of Unicorn. Another thing is Resell Value, GS150 has less resell value than that of Unicorn.

If You can Compromise little on Mileage (3-5 kmpl) and don't bother about Resell Value then You can definitely Go ahead with this Sexy GS150. You will not be disappointed for your decision.

About Tubeless Tyre, Well You can add Rs.300-400 extra for the same while Purchasing the Bike from the Dealer. But, I think Tubeless tyre is much more maintenance prone than the General Tyres with Tube, because its repairing cost is around 3 fold more than Ordinary Puncture.

      Thanks

    1. Hello Harish,
As You are caring for Mileage => A BIG NO for Yamaha..
Now, between Honda Dazzler and Unicorn.. I will suggest you to go for "Honda Unicorn" because You are going to ride the Bike with Family, so Dazzler is not that much Comfortable in terms of Pillion Rider Position..

So, You should go blindly with Honda Unicorn.. :)

      Thanks

    3. Thanks Satya.. for valuable guidance, I visited Honda showroom and see Honda Unicorn, Honda Shine and also hero glamour f1. My first preference and desire is Unicorn and my height is ok with Unicorn. I m little bit confused as my weight is approx 70 kgs, age - 33 .. And 60% i will ride alone and 40% with family.... Would unicorn fine for me or If I go for 125 cc then which one is better between shine and glamour.

  24. Hello Satya Narayan,

I have read your reviews and are very interesting. You have too much knowledge of various bikes. I didn't found detailed review for Honda Trigger.

Actually I want to purchase a 150cc bike. I am concerned about comfort sitting with family, good mileage, reliable, powerful and smooth engine and stylish look. I am confused between Honda CB Unicorn and Honda CB Trigger. Unicorn seems very simple. Is trigger would be comfortable to ride with family. Its very difficult to decide as its not very easy to change bike and both are much expensive too. My usage is approx 25 kms daily. Simply I use it for going office and back home.

I need your valuable suggestion. Thanks in advance.

  25. And what is difference between Honda CD Trigger std / dlx / cbs.

    1. ya, you are right.. Unicorns seems too simple.. trigger has got the engine inherited from Unicorn, however, when it comes to riding and comfort its different from that of Unicorn,
Have a test ride , u will feel the difference yourself. & ur confusion will end soon.
even the price of trigger std in delhi is 74K (on road).

  26. Hi Charanjeet, its abt a month since i got the sexy black trigger std. well, coming back to your query:

    STD: breaks: front - disc
    Rear - drum
    DLX: front- DISC
    rear- disc
CBS: breaks : Front- DISC + CBS (combi or combined breaking system)
    rear- DISC.

I just had my first service today. belive it or not bue i got 53 KMPL in city ..that too from few hundred kms.
Lookwise its a well proportionate bike and when it comes to city corner, trust me, its sharper than others. i hv tried pulser 150 and suzuki GS150r.
if you are planning for a 150cc machine you may consider it in first place.

    1. Hello Ashwini,

Thanks for sharing your knowledge and experience.

I am planning to buy it soon. But my one question is that whether the pillion seat is comfortable for a lady to sit along with a child.

    2. hello Charanjeet, sorry for the too late response.. hope u must have got your bike by now. but, as far as your question is concerned, the pillion seat is wide enough for women to sit comfortably, however if you are concerned about slipping during harsh breakings; the rear position is very much parallel to ground and hence it would not be a problem..

as far as my experience is concerned it was good (at least better than pulser & fz series.)

    3. Hi Ashwini,

Thanks for the reply. I would buy it in the month of December. Some guys are saying that the plastic used in wiser and switches is not of good quality, is it so?

One of my friend got yamaha sz rr, its also a good bike and getting mileage of 47-52 kmpl.

Now which one would be better between yamaha sz rr and honda triger std. Still i have one month time to finalize.

      Delete
    4. once again, sorry for the latest reply..
      1. Firstly, the minute details for that matter the plastic quality are matter of personal experience (depending on relative comparison of subject).
i have driven almost 1400km by now in delhi, and the quality has not been the problem ( like unwanted shivering sound or vibrations or shining) . hope it would not make any difference in long run too.
      2. I am completly doubtly abt the mileage of SZ rr. yamaha is NOT KNOWN for mileage atlest in 150cc segment.
I was also considering SZRR prior trigger std.

anyway, i would like to suggest you to visit the honda showroom and then come to any conclusion.

      All the best. !!

    1. Being confused, means you have researched the market. :)
So, considering all your efforts i would request you to narrow down your choice.
Then we can discuss to select the right machine keeping factors like look, riding posture, mileage and other details in consideration, but then we need to know your views first.

    2. Thanx for response ashwini
I am looking for good looking, comfort riding and as daily usage is approx 80 km mileage is also key factor.
Looking in to these factors plz suggest one of best machine.

    3. Dear Aashish,
Thanks for coming to "indianbikereview" and Sorry for my absent. :)
Well before giving any suggestion, lets know what are the input you provided for your bike.
      - Usage is 80 km/day.
      - Look.
      - Riding Comfort.
      - Mileage.

Along with that you have already mentioned that you want a 150cc Bike.

From above points, it is clear that You will Ride your bike most of the time, because using a Bike for 2500 kms/month is treated as a Heavy user. Now, since you will drive so much You must chose a Bike with Better Mileage and most importantly Reliable machine. From this perspective, You should go for Honda Unicorn Blindly if you want to stick to 150cc Bike. Honda has an Extremely Reliable Engine. It will give you a sure shot mileage of 50kmpl in mixed drive i.e. on Highway and City. No other bike can come close to this Bike in any Perspective.

But, If you want better Mileage like 60kmpl then you have to chose a 125cc Bike. Because No 150cc Bike can give you more than 50kmpl mileage consistently. So, if you can Compromise with CC, then You should go for 125cc Hero Glamour, which will give you 60+kmpl on Highway and 55+kmpl inside city. So, Choice is Yours. If you chose 125cc Bike you will save Rs.500+ per month on your petrol Bill.

Now, You decide which bike to go for. If you are still confused, please provide me few more details of your requirements like : Budget, Power, CC, Look, Mileage(50+ or 60+), Where you drive your bike most i.e. on Highway or City Traffic etc. So, that I can analyze your requirement and provide you the best option for you.

      Thanks
